Scribble soup for writers' block #20: The inner critic

Who is your inner critic? How does it stop you from writing?

It is hard to write with someone constantly reading over your shoulders. Watching and waiting for you to make a mistake. So you write slowly, getting nowhere. Before you know it an hour has past and you've only written two sentences. You read the lines constantly, over and over again. You painstakingly check the spelling and the grammer. By the time you've done this a hundred times, you've forgotten what you intended to write. Emotionally, intellectually and creatively drained, you file the work away...If you never see it again, it'll be too soon.

S
uddenly the heavens opened up.
Catalina stopped what she was doing and ran for shelter.
Running blindly through the heavy rain, she slipped in the mud, smacking her head on the hard surface.
And then there was nothing.
Moaning in pain she slowly opened her eyes.
Battered and bruised from her fall, she lay defeated on the ground as the rain washed over her.
Lately nothing had gone her way.
Everything she did had turned to shite.
Dumping Ian was a mistake she realised.
Bitching about Sarah, her best friend, was an even bigger mistake.
Until now, she hadn't quite realised how important they were to her.
Too late, she thought to herself.
Too many 'effen' lies had been said.
Even the truth won't save her hide now.
"Relationships are a pain," she bemoaned to the heavens.
"Finish what you have begun," a voice whispered in her head.
Lately she'd been ignoring that voice, but no more she decided.
"Yes, this time I will finish what I have begun," she shouted.

Scribble Soup for Writers' Block #6: Stranger than fiction

Use your imagination to create a character based on a stranger.

He sat alone on the park bench, slowly unpacking the contents of his lunchbox. With each new item, his smile widened to reveal white crooked teeth. He picked up the sandwich and slowly with careful deliberation, unwrapped it. He brought it to closer to his hooked nose and inhaled. His ginger moustache wiggled in anticipation. He took a large masculine bite and closed his eyes. He chewed and rolled the food around in his mouth, savouring each morsel. He groaned in delight before swallowing. He put the sandwich down replacing it with a small pink barbie drink bottle. It looked out of place in his large hands. He smiled to himself while he unscrewed the cap. He brought the bottle to his nose and once again inhaled. He waved the flask slowly beneath his nose taking deep breaths. His large body vibrated with barely contained pleasure. He sipped delicately at first, then with great enthusiasm. A splash of orange liquid escaped from his mouth and made its way down his throat. He chased the movement with his hands, sensuously tracing the contours of his neck. His pink tongue dashed about quickly as he licked his fingers. He laughed in delight at the stickiness of it all, before returning his attention back to the sandwich. Another inhale, and another bite until the only thing left were the crumbs. He chased the crumbs with a wet finger, until even they were gone. He rubbed his flat stomach, while smacking his lips together. He packed away the lunchbox and the pink barbie water bottle and walked away.

Scribble Soup for Writers' Block #7: Emotions are creatures in a zoo

Your creature is fear. What kind of creature is this? What is its natural habitat? What does it look like? What does it eat? Is it predator or prey? How does it reproduce? What advice would you give someone about this creature? What warnings would you give? (10 minutes)

Fear is a creature of the unknown. It is irratiotional, barely contained and rarely tamed. It is a creature of the dark but also of many disguises. It looks like your nightmares come to life. It is a predator that feeds on your insecurities, imagination and lack of knowledge. It has a long life cycle, living for generations. It reproduces by feeding on your rationale. It is not always bad. If you watch it and study it closely, learn to read the signs it can help you. But beware it is an irrational creature, it just might bite.
